comment on academy breaks from tradition with latest oscar nominees for score by

i really don't know how this qualifies as a good thing. most of this year's original scores nominated were just mediocre, but the academy only nominated them because now they can say: "hey guys, look how forward-thinking we are now!". it's the only explanation on why they choose things like the scores for moonlight and lion instead of much superior scores like nocturnal animals and fantastic beasts and where to find them. i've been listening film scores for all my life, but i guess that if the film music from the future looks like those scores, i guess i'll have to stick with the good old classics from williams, goldsmith, barry, horner, morricone, etc.

foreign disservice: how the policies of president donald trump have weighed on t

the best foreign language film oscar race has its share of passionate supporters each year, and has certainly also had its fair share of controversy. the one-two punch of 2007's 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days not making the shortlist springs easily to mind, as does the disqualification of the band's visit over its use of english from that same year. this year, we got off to a rollicking start as paul verhoeven's elle was snubbed by the folks who select the shortlist. that…

comment on entertainment execs, artists “deeply disappointed” after lorde cancel

yet on maps scores of years ago there is a place called palestine. israel is home to us, european and various other expats who had no business going to a foreign country and stealing land that had been occupied by people for generations. who the hell cares whether there was a palestinian government or not. it wasn't yours to take. there are documted cases of israeli settlers throwing palestinians off their land. this was out right robbery.

look for a growing foreign factor to organize the year’s oscar choices

when the academy of motion picture arts and sciences begins its eight-day oscar nomination voting blitz on january 5, it will test a question that was floating around even before the group began its panic-push for member diversity in 2016. that is, has a growing foreign factor changed the oscar choices? the issue is muddier than it might seem. for one thing, the academy has never been crystal clear about the foreign/domestic breakdown of its expanding membership, which…

comment on academy breaks from tradition with latest oscar nominees for score by

i agree with moonlight but not with lion. the score is perfect in the movie. also, film music has nothing to do with the nominees. in the past 10 years the academy nominated scores for films praised by the critics regardless of how good or bad they are. and they only stick with nominating williams and newman regarless of the films they score. so if anything, it's they who seems to be stuck in a trend instead of actually going diverse and nominate for scores due to the originality (after all, it's called best original score and not best orchestral score) and how effective they are in the films. however, complaining because they nominate other kind of scores is stupid. and all the 5 nominees are orchestral scores with themes and styles

comment on woody allen’s ‘wonder wheel’ scores december release (exclusive) by t

i don't feel that confident in its awards chances yet, but perhaps a trailer will change things. it looks to be somewhere between blue jasmine and magic in the moonlight (in the worst possible way) to me. but if both this and/or the mountain between us are well-reviewed, winslet could very well be looking at her 8th oscar nod! (that is, unless she gets amy adams'd and they cancel each other out.)
